Integrated Noise & Safety Barrier

on Bridges

Bridge structures place high demands on vehicle restraint systems (VRS) and noise barriers, particularly in terms of space, structural loads, anchoring, installation and maintenance. Conventional solutions use a standalone VRS positioned between the noise barrier structure and traffic. This requires additional space and can result in higher loads and more complex anchoring to the bridge structure.

The integrated REBLOC system combines both functions in one single structure. The noise barrier is mounted directly on top of the precast concrete safety barrier, allowing the complete system to be installed immediately adjacent to the roadway.

To the manufacturer’s knowledge, this is the first such combination tested on a bridge deck in accordance with EN 1317-2. With a total system height of 4 m, consisting of a 1 m safety barrier and a 3 m aluminum noise barrier panel, the system was successfully tested to containment level L2/H2, a working width of 0,95 m (W3) and no dynamic deflection. The required anchoring depth is only 12 cm.

Low Weight & Efficient Load Distribution

The integrated system is designed to minimize loads on the bridge. One aluminum panel with a length of 5 m and a height of 3 m weighs solely around 300 kg, while the safety barrier weighs approx. 1,400 kg per meter.

Conventional noise barriers typically transfer wind loads into the bridge deck as concentrated loads through individual posts. Whilst with the REBLOC system, the forces are first distributed through the VRS and then transferred into the bridge deck via twelve M16 anchors per 5 m element, resulting in a more uniformly distributed line load. At the same time, the load is applied nearer the bridge supports, which shortens the lever arm and significantly reduces the bending and torsional stresses on the cantilever. This efficient distribution allows for wider bridge decks, particularly in new and replacement structures, without increasing the structural loads compared with conventional solutions. The space gained can be used for sidewalks and cycle paths.

Proven Safety

The road safety function is provided entirely by the integrated VRS. Compliance was demonstrated through crash tests in accordance with EN 1317-2 on a representative bridge deck, including measurement of the forces during the impact test and classification according to the collision force classes specified in EN 1991-2, 4.7.3.3 (1).

During the TB51 crash test, a 13-tonne bus impacted the system at 70 km/h impact speed and at an angle of 20°. Following the test, no damage requiring repair was identified on either the load-bearing base system or its connection to the bridge structure.

Efficient Use of Space & Improved Protection

By integrating the noise barrier into the VRS, the combined solution requires less space than conventional designs. Eliminating the space normally required between separate VRS and noise barriers therefore creates additional usable width, which provides an important advantage particularly for urban bridges where space is limited.

As an integrated system, it can be positioned directly adjacent to the roadway, which additionally improves its acoustic effectiveness. Furthermore, vehicles are restrained at an early stage, while pedestrians, cyclists, and bridge maintenance staff remain protected behind the integrated noise & safety barrier. The construction also provides protection against spray, dirt, debris and pressure waves from heavy goods vehicles.

Simple Installation & Maintenance

The integrated design positions the noise barrier nearer the roadway as opposed to the outer bridge edge. This makes it more easily accessible from the pedestrian or maintenance area behind the system, simplifying inspections and maintenance operations.

With an anchoring depth of only 12 cm, the system can be installed without interfering with the bridge waterproofing. The system’s modularity minimizes road closures, allows for installation rates of up to 200 m of completed noise barrier per day, and makes the replacement of individual elements easier.

In addition, the precast concrete barrier can be used as a temporary safety barrier during the construction phase and later supplemented by the noise barrier for permanent use. This reduces material transport, installation effort and construction time. A dedicated system solution is also available for bridge expansion joints.

Conclusion

The integrated REBLOC noise & safety barrier combines vehicle restraint system, noise protection and efficient load transfer in one modular structure. Its low weight, minimal anchoring depth and distributed transfer of wind and impact loads help reduce demands on the bridge structure compared with conventional solutions.

At the same time, installation directly adjacent to the roadway makes efficient use of limited bridge space and can improve noise protection. Performance verified in accordance with EN 1317-2, a 12 cm anchoring depth and rapid modular installation make the system a technically efficient solution for new bridges and replacement structures.
